FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: What is GRIP-FLEX?
A: GRIP-FLEX is a pavement micro-surfacing product used on airports, bridges, parking lots, and private roadways.
Q: Why is GRIP-FLEX used?
A: GRIP-FLEX is used in three types of ways: 1) Preventive Maintenance: GRIP-FLEX protects your costly HMA and PCC pavements from harmful UV rays, water, oil, gas, chemicals, and other detrimental factors that destroy asphalt and concrete. 2) Pavement Rehabilitation: GRIP-FLEX can restore your old, oxidized, and raveled pavements and provide a brand new fuel-resistant, anti-skid wearing surface. 3) "Band-Aide" Rehabilitation: When reconstruction is far too expensive for your budget, GRIP-FLEX can be installed to buy you 5-7+ years of useful life while you set aside money for the costly reconstruction.
Q: Who uses GRIP-FLEX?
A: Public, private, and commercial service airports, US Army, Navy, Air Force, State DOT organizations, home owners associations, and Wal-Mart just to name a few. There is currently over 10,000,000 square yards of GRIP-FLEX in use on airside pavements.
Q: How is GRIP-FLEX different than other pavement products on the market?
A: GRIP-FLEX MICRO-SURFACING is a thermoplastic compound
that uses highly refined, environmentally safe coal tar derivative for
anti-oxidation and fuel-resistance qualities to create an
environmentally safe and stable wearing surface for both HMA and PCC pavements.
Q: What kind of long-term performance can I expect out of GRIP-FLEX?
A: It is realistic to state that if you install a GRIP-FLEX Surface
on structurally sound airside pavement the only additional maintenance
that will be required during the following decade or more is some crack
filling and some re-painting and an occasional touch-up. If you
resurface your pavement every 15 years with GRIP-FLEX you probably will
never have to endure the crushing expense of pavement reconstruction.
Q: Is GRIP-FLEX approved for FAA funding?
A: Yes. GRIP-FLEX meets the performance requirements outlined in FAA Engineering Brief 35A.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT GRIP-FLEX
-GRIP-FLEX is an environmentally friendly composite of thermoplastics
(think plastic gas cans or mudflaps) and a very specially refined
derivative of coal tar and functions as a BINDER for aggregates.
-Unlike sealcoats, rejuvenators, or asphalt coating that try to emulate
GRIP-FLEX by using cheap and short-lived latex additives (usually
described as polymers), GRIP-FLEX Micro-Surfacing will hold crushed
rock (not junk sand) in place for 10-15 years to create a superior
long-term wearing surface.
-Unlike asphalt based products GRIP-FLEX
will not break down environmentally. When GRIP-FLEX is installed over
asphalt we stop the asphalt from breaking down and protect both your
pavement and the surrounding environment.
-When
GRIP-FLEX with aggregate is installed as a wearing surface it will be
more flexible than the underlying asphalt, but will not stretch like a
balloon... if it did it would not be capable of holding the aggregate
in place. Like a 2" or 1" asphalt overlay, GRIP-FLEX will show
reflective cracking. Depending on the condition of the pavement and
the underlying base and also climatic conditions, reflective cracking
may show through within months of the installation, just like an
asphalt overlay.
-One benefit of a GRIP-FLEX Surface to you is that if
the cracks show through you can touch up the surface with a little
GRIP-FLEX and the overall color will always be BLACK.... even if you
chose to use a hot rubber crack filler over GRIP-FLEX... the color of
both the GRIP-FLEX and the crack filler are BLACK.
-GRIP-FLEX will
stay black and will not oxidize and will protect your investment in the
underlying asphalt. And when you need to patch the asphalt due to
damage from a variety of unforeseen circumstances, just re-apply a
small amount of GRIP-FLEX over the ashpalt patch and the new GRIP-FLEX
will blend with the old GRIP-FLEX and you will once again have an
attractive homogenous BLACK surface that will continue to look good,
protect your asphalt, provde a safe skid resistant surface and most
importantly help to preserve your investment in your very expensive
pavement.
